Our Story
Siyaphambili Multipurpose Cooperative was born out of a shared dream among the people of Makhungutja – a dream to preserve traditional artistry while creating sustainable livelihoods. For many years, the women and youth of the community practiced weaving and crafting as a cultural skill passed down through generations. However, limited access to markets and resources meant that their talent often went unnoticed and undervalued.
In 2023, community members came together with a vision: to turn creativity into opportunity. Siyaphambili, meaning “Moving Forward”, was formed as a cooperative to unite artisans under one umbrella, ensuring that their work could reach wider markets and provide a reliable source of income for families.
The cooperative began with simple products like woven baskets and doormats, crafted with natural materials sourced locally. Over time, Siyaphambili expanded its range to include tablemats, decorative pieces, and other premium handicrafts, blending traditional techniques with modern designs to meet evolving market demands.
What sets Siyaphambili apart is not just its products, but its purpose. Every item tells a story of resilience, culture, and community. The cooperative has become a beacon of hope, empowering members with skills training, financial literacy, and collective bargaining power.
